During my career I have refined my lifetime goal of helping people with their legal issues.  I appreciate the opportunity to help the people and families I serve. My practice focuses on elder law, special needs planning, estate planning, probate and trust administration.  In order to help clients and others understand how I can be of help let me tell you of my background, education, experience and philosophy of practice.

I grew up in the Kansas City area, graduating from Shawnee Mission West High School. After attending Drake University for one year I graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Kansas School of Business with highest distinction and Juris Doctorate from the University of Kansas School of Law.  During the first twenty years of my career I practiced law in several small to medium law size firms in the Kansas City area.  I am licensed to practice law in Kansas and Missouri and have been in firms with offices in both states.  While in private practice I was involved in many different areas of law: civil litigation, business law, business transactions, real estate transactions, bankruptcy and estate planning. In 2001 I left private practice and became a trust officer in a local trust company.  As a trust officer I administered trusts and estates and saw how trusts operated after their creation. I saw the financial and emotional costs of inappropriately drafted documents.

While serving as a trust officer I went back to law school and in 2009 received a Masters of Law in Elder Law from the University of Kansas School of Law.  In 2010 I came back to the private practice of law.  By limiting my areas of practice I can better help individuals and families plan for the eventualities of life and to deal with the legal emergencies that come with accidents, debilitating diseases and death of a loved one. I strive to be a resource to families, individuals, other attorneys, financial planners, accountants and other professionals navigating an often confusing area of law.  Among the issues I confront are meeting the needs of families with special needs members, old and young, preserving government benefits and allowing people to leave a legacy of their choosing.  My goal in helping people is to explain the law and then identify issues and consequences of options in any situation.  Then I work with clients to come up with the best plan for the situation and work to implement the plan.  Every client has a different situation with goals and limitations that shape their plan. Since I have the experience, education and background to help most individuals and families in my areas of practice I believe I can help determine and implement the best plan for each client.

I have been married to my high school sweetheart Carole since 1979. She is a CPA in private practice. We have two married children: our daughter Lauren lives in Olathe and is a physical therapist and our son Ryan lives in Los Angeles and is a structural engineer. We belong to Church of the Resurrection.  I have volunteered for youth work camps, coached youth basketball, been president and board member of a local Habitat for Humanity and been a volunteer for Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care and Matthew’s Ministry serving special need people. With any spare time, I like to travel, read, work on landscaping at home and do some cooking.
